Project: Constructive contractibility of CW-complexes associated to arithmetic groups and applications to Hecke operators (DC7)

Supervisors: Graham Ellis, James Cruickshank

Location: University of Galway, Ireland

My name is Frederik Wunden and I am from Germany. I completed my bachelor’s degree in mathematics at the University of Konstanz. Afterwards, I pursued my master’s in mathematics at the University of Bonn. During this time, I developed an interest in algebraic topology and homotopy theory. I wrote my master’s thesis, supervised by Stefan Schwede, about equivariant homotopy theory. One year of my masters was spent on a study exchange at EPFL in Lausanne.

Now I am a PhD student in mathematics at the University of Galway, where I am part of the COGENT network. I am supervised by Graham Ellis and James Cruickshank. My research focuses on the homology of arithmetic groups, a subject that connects group theory, topology and number theory, and has connections to algebraic K-theory and the theory of modular forms. As part of my PhD research, I will also do a secondment at Université Grenoble Alpes, which will provide an opportunity for collaboration and further academic exchange.
